Role of Men and Women

3) Roles of men and women-it appears that this needs to be relooked at so that we can see what passages are prescriptive and descriptive (from what I could tell in this blog-you might want to hang Paul in the town square for his use of women in the church). There seems to be much confusion at this time.

There has been some discussion on this topic here: http://bailingwater.blogspot.com/2007/09/role-of-men-and-women.html

We went through John Brug's Bible study on the roles of men and women a couple years ago. The Bible study was well laid out and very informative for our members. The Bible study was also substantive--it dug deeply into God's inspired Word. If there is confusion out there, congregations should go through this Bible study again. It would be well worth it!

That was a good study, california...
Could you address specifically about the role of women in the world/society? Many understand about what Scripture says about womens' role in the church and in the home/family. There seems to be disagreement on her role in the world/society. How is this pulled from Scripture?
Thanks!

As far as I'm concerned, what Scripture says regarding the roles of men and women in the home and in the church does not apply to the world/society. Scripture is silent in this area, and we dare not bind consciences where Scripture is silent.

Mr. California -

I agree with you on this. But the WELS position, as interpreted by some does not. As cited earlier, in the early 1990s St. James in St. Paul, MN was booted from the synod because the pastors questioned the synodical position that role authority extended into society. I have much correspondence from this event as a family relative was at most of the meetings. She, in fact, asked the soon to retire MN DP if she was sinning because she has a higher level management position which includes authority over men. The DP said yes.

California on my mind, you write,

"As far as I'm concerned, what Scripture says regarding the roles of men and women in the home and in the church does not apply to the world/society."

The WELS statements on the issue say,

"Christians also accept the biblical role relationship principle for their life and work in the world."

Whoops, are you WELS? If so, you have a problem. (You must have missed that part in this Brug's study.)

It seems many in the Wisconsin Synod don't like to practice what they preach.
